Hymenorrhaphy or hymen reconstruction surgery is the temporary surgical restoration of the hymen. a membrane that partially closes the opening of the vagina. It is also known as hymenoplasty. In many cultures and religions, an intact hymen is traditionally taken to indicate a mark of virginity. Due to reasons other than intercourse, such as vigorous exercise or tampon insertion, the hymen becomes torn or ruptured. Under such circumstances, many women want their hymen reconstructed, which can be accomplished through a Hymenoplasty.
The hymen is a thin layer of tissue that encloses the vaginal area. The hymen can easily break in many situations outside of intercourse, including vigorous activities such as horseback riding or gymnastics, the insertion of tampons, or even during regular pap smears. Many women may not even be aware that their hymen has torn, as there may be little to no blood loss and no pain. Hymen repair surgery, also known as hymenoplasty, is a simple procedure that will repair a torn hymen or build a hymen that is not present. It is important to understand that the surgery will not restore virginity, but it will allow for women to tear and bleed the first time they engage in intercourse after surgery.
The Best Candidates for Hymen Repair
The best hymenoplasty candidates are those who need to ensure that their hymen is intact during intercourse on their matrimonial night. The surgery needs to be performed at least 6 weeks prior to the matrimonial night. If the breaking of your hymen is imperative for you due to social, cultural, religious, or personal reasons, your plastic surgeon will discuss the surgery openly and honestly with you.
Hymen Repair Risks & Complications
Risks are rare but when they do occur additional medications or even surgery may be required. Such risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, pain with intercourse, and deformity. Also, the amount of bleeding upon first intercourse following surgery cannot be predicted. However, most patients never experience these risks, as they are quite rare.
